1.HISTORY :
Department of Respiratory Medicine started on year in Stanley Medical College. Department currently has HOD, Professor, Associate and Asst. Professor giving various services and treatment facilities.
It also has peripheral Institution. Govt. Hospital of Thoracic medicine, Started in the Year 1928. Which is spread across 110 Acores. It also has ART (Centre of Excellence) which takes care of HIV Patient. About 600 IP and 800 OP Patients services taken care per day.
In 2008, Post graduation course M.D (Respiratory Medicine) started, with 2 seats which increased to 6 seats currently.

!) Pulmonary Function Tests:
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT's) are useful in diagnosing various lung disorders. They also measure the degree of impairment due to disease. Pulmonary Function Tests are also used frequently to assess preoperative risk.
Various Tests done are:
  • Spirometry (PFT) and Reversibility Testing
  • Diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO)
  • Lung volume (FRC, TLC)
  • Six minutes walk test (6 MWT).
2) Flexible Video Bronchoscopy
. A fibreoptic Bronchoscopy system with video and photographic capability is used for performing bronchoscopies which helps in the complete visual assessment of air passages and in making an accurate diagnosis of infection, cancerous changes, and also in obtaining biological samples for pathological examinations.

  • Bronchoscopic Alvoelar Lavage(BAL)
  • Bronchoscopic Wash and Brush
  • Transbronchial Needle Aspiration(TBNA)
  • Transbronchial lung Biopsy(TBLB) etc
3) Pleural Procedures done are
  • Pleural aspiration and biopsy
  • Intercostal tube drainage and Pleurodesis
4) Other Tests done are :
  • Fine needle aspiration Cytology and biopsy
  • Lung biopsy via CT guided
  • Bronchial artery embolisation with Radiology Dept for Hemoptysis Patients.
