1.HISTORY

IRRH & DPS
The Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and Department of Plastic Surgery (IRRH & DPS) has been regarded as a “center of excellence” for treating various types of injuries and disorders of the hand, providing highly specialized and comprehensive care for these patients. Apart from hand surgery, the department also caters to the needs of patients requiring General plastic surgery, Cosmetic surgery, trauma, and Reconstructive Micro-surgery.


History

 

  • It all started in 1971 , when the foundation was laid down by prof RV
  • His vision was to create a state of the art facility for plastic surgery at his alma mater stanley medical college
  • The primary motto of our department has been “WORK TO SERVE”.

Phase I

 

  • This institute was started as the department of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery on January 26th 1971 by Prof. R. Venkataswami with 20 Special beds.
  • The Wilson ward was the core of the department with 4 beds, the remaining 16 spread across other wards. The veranda of the Wilson ward was converted into an operating theatre including emergency theatre.
  • Innovative ideas like the famous “red line” was painted from the casualty to the plastic surgery department to help guide patients with hand injury without any hassle.

Phase II

  • In 1974, Hand Injury Service was started with a separate Hand Injury ward with 20 beds and dedicated Hand Injury Operation Theatre (HIOT) exclusively for Hand. A separate database for Hand and Plastic Surgery were also established
  • A separate database for Hand and Plastic Surgery were also established.
  • 24*7 dedicated theatre
  • Appointment of a barber exclusively of our department
  • Rehabilitation under the same roof

PhaseIII

  • Introduction of microsurgery in 1976 by Dr Peter Nathan from USA
  • Mch course started in 1978 ( 2 seats )
  • 1979 – renamed as DEPARTMENT OF PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE HAND SURGERY
  • First thumb replantation by Dr Nirmala Subramaniyam in 1979
  • First free tissue transfer , wrap around flap by Prof RV in 1981
  • Brand new ot complex with 5 ot( 2 for emergencies, 2 for general plastic, 1 for microsurgery)
  • Brand new space housing physiotherapy, splint workshop
  • Introduction of comprehensive cleft lip and palate clinic involving multiple specialities ( dental/ ent / pediatrics/ rehabilitation worker)Phase IV
  • To impart specialized training and develop skill on hand, a certificate Course on Hand Surgery was initiated by the Government of Tamil Nadu, in the year 1986.
  • A 20 bed Arcot Hanumantha Rao Ward (AHR Ward) for women and children from public donations was inaugurated in 1987.

Phase V

  • A new building complex with an additional male ward with 20 more beds were commissioned by Prof. G. BaIakrishnan in 2003.

Phase VI

  • Hand Transplant from Brain Dead Individuals

Our Facilities

  • 7 wards with a bed strength of 120
  • 9 operation theatres – 4 elective theatres in first floor, 4 emergency hand theatres in ground floor, 1 septic ot
  • Elective ot functions from Monday to Friday , emergency OT runs 24*7
  • OPD ( Monday to Saturday) , physiotherapy section , splint section.
  • Dressing room
  • Pain clinic.
